NEVIC - Nordic Electric Vehicle Interoperability Centre

Background
The new generation of electric vehicles (EVs) has come to Denmark and the rest of Europe. In the coming years the sales of EVs is expected to increase and seeing an EV in the traffic will become an everyday experience. With this development comes also a need to ensure that the EVs effortlessly can be charged on all charging posts regardless of car brand, EV service operator, DSO or power producer. The users will experience that charging and billing occurs seamlessly across operators and geographical areas. This wide compatibility between technical components as well as operators is called interoperability.

To ensure that all players experience true interoperability a national test centre is founded. To test the concept and obtain experiences with the first EV operators, the Nordic EV Interoperability Centre (NEVIC) will perform initial testprocedures and demonstrate the concepts during late 2011, and first months of 2012.

Three of the largest EV operators, Better Place, ChooseEV and CleanCharge have together with DONG Energy, the Danish Electric Vehicle Alliance and Risø DTU begun analysing how roaming activities can be realised. NEVIC will function as an independent third-party entity, which can analyse the interoperability of components and systems and advise the operators on how true interoperability is ensured.

Ressources and time
The project is supported financially by Copenhagen Cleantech Cluster. Better Place, ChoosEV, CleanCharge, Danish Electric Vehicle Association and Dong Energy are partners and have contributed to the project. The project is expected to be finished in may 2012, when the interoperability centre is fully developed and services to ensure true interoperability can be independently offered.
