| Association of Danish Engineers (IDA) International Collaboration on Climate Plans |
| IDA’s Danish Climate Plan is part of an international collaboration of engineer associations in the USA, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Japan, Ireland, India and Finland, among other countries, which develops comparable scenarios up to the Climate Summit in Copenhagen in December 2009. The aim is to show how these countries can contribute to achieving a goal of limiting global warming to two degrees on average. The DTU Climate Centre at Risoe is part of the steering committee of this project. |

Bioenergy and manure technology. The overall goal of this project is to evaluate the whole-chain GHG abatement potential of different conversion technologies, including biogas treatment of slurry and plant material, and combustion of a separated fibre fraction. Activities include assessment of soil N cycling and greenhouse gas emissions after application of anaerobically digested manure for soil fertility purposes. Specific aim is to describe and quantify the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) after application of bio-energy residues to soil.

The wealth created in the World over the last century is based on easy access to inexpensive fossil fuels. This era is coming to an end. The resources are limited and the demand from everywhere in the world is growing rapidly. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly clear that the emission of CO2 that follows the use of fossil fuels is threatening the climate of the Earth. Arguably this makes the development of sustainable energy solutions the most important scientific and technical challenge of our time. It is the aim of the present proposal to contribute to the solution of these problems in selected areas. We will address the underlying scientific questions and use the insight gained to point to solutions to some of the technical problems.

In this project, a novel approach to assess net stand carbon uptake is used. The approach has an interdisciplinary character as it introduces the concept of water use efficiency (WUE), traditionally used for agricultural yield estimations and drought tolerance of plants, in the field of biosphere carbon cycling and greenhouse gas mitigation. The method will enable the assessment of carbon and water fluxes of the trees separately in the ecosystem and thus is an important key in understanding the carbon flux variability and how this is influenced by climate and other environmental factors.
