Biomaterials and value added products

BIO-REF aims at developing technical solutions for sustainable production of biomaterials: biofibres, biocomposites, biopolymers (e.g. biofilms), biomedicines, food-additives and functional food from plants and lignocellulosic materials.

Biofibres are the natural cellulosic bundles of single fibres derived from designed processes (chemical or biological) of plant materials. Those are used as reinforcement in composite materials when mixed and processed with a synthetic or biological polymer matrix. Wet milling processes using specific enzymes for extraction of water soluble biopolymers such as hemicelluloses and beta-glucans aim at producing new bioplastics, food-additives, functional foods, and from specialty biomasses (e.g. algae) also biomedicines. Waste products from agriculture such as husks and hull from grain production are important raw materials.
