Bob Dylan song to be soundtrack for COP15

Bob Dylan's famous song from 1962, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, is going to be the unofficial soundtrack for COP15 in Copenhagen. The premiere of a unique new film with this song takes place at Kongens Nytorv, Copenhagen, on Sunday, 6 December at 13:00.

Hard Rain was inspired by the Cuban crisis, a time when humanity was probably closer to a devastating nuclear war than it has ever been before.

The film is to be released at the opening of UN’s Hard Rain exhibition in Copenhagen on 6 December. It has a live recording of Bob Dylan singing “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall” illustrated with photographs from the Hard Rain project. This project includes exhibitions, a book and a film, all aiming to make the world live in accordance with nature and basic human needs.

The many banners from the UN Seal the Deal campaign will also be presented at the exhibition at Kongens Nytorv. The campaign encouraged citizens to sign a call for world governments to reach a fair, balanced and effective climate agreement in Copenhagen.

The event is organised by the UNEP Risoe Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development at Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, DTU, UNEP (on behalf of the UN) and Mark Edwards, the Hard Rain Project.

The DVD includes an essay by the known environmentalist Lloyd Timberlake. The essay focuses on a central dilemma of climate negotiations. "Right now," he writes, "we have two great challenges concerning life on earth. One is to live and consume within nature's limits. The second is to help billions of people in developing countries to live a dignified life, allowing these people to consume more, not less, in order to achieve a decent standard of living. The world's developing countries will not accept a climate agreement that prevents them from developing.“

UNEP's Executive Director, Achim Steiner, says: "The poetry in A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall clearly illustrates what the world is facing, if climate change continues unchecked. But Bob Dylan also wrote another song. One, reflecting a strong and successful outcome in Copenhagen: The Times They Are A-Changin.”
